Veszprem 2023: the past, present and future of Eleusis 2023

By Press release Mercoledì, 05 Luglio 2023

From 3 to 16 July, Eleusis, European Capital of Culture 2023 will be the host of Veszprem 2023 with a series of cultural and artistic activities that will tell the story of the Greek city's past, present and future.

Veszprém and its region hosts the world: 29 cities from around the globe to be exact, throughout the year. Guest cities from Japan to Jamaica have 2 weeks to showcase their culture within the framework of Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture’s InterUrban event series, carried out by well connected Hangvető. From January till December almost 150 programmes, including world class jazz concerts, creative writing workshops, street theater performances and a bicycle raves feature in Veszprém’s most diverse, most wide-reaching programme series as of yet. The city presented in the programme will be Elefsina, Greece, European Capital of Culture 2023.

Once a magnificent ancient city known as Eleusis, it is now perceived by many as merely an agglomeration of Athens and a forsaken graveyard without any notable attractions. However, in 2023, this perception undergoes a radical transformation. Similar to Veszprém, Elefsina became the European Capital of Culture and utilizes this significant year to reshape itself from a deprived industrial city into something new, captivating, and self-assured. In pursuit of this goal, the organizers emphasize three distinct yet interconnected central program themes: People, Society, Environment, and Work. These themes reflect the city's unique characteristics and address the contemporary challenges confronting both Elefsina and Europe.
